His fate rests with the 31-member state Senate, which has the power to remove him after a trial that opened on Tuesday on 16 of those articles of impeachment. Senators rejected a motion to dismiss all the charges by a vote of 24-6 and voted against additional motions to throw out individual charges. The state Senate's impeachment rules committee set aside four charges involving Paxton's private business dealings that House charges said were obstruction of justice and false statements in official records. At the end of the trial on the 16 remaining charges, the Senate could dismiss those four charges or hold a separate trial on them.

The FTC complaint revealed that in between June and August 2017, a male Ring employee viewed "thousands" of videos captured on Ring cameras belonging to "at least 81" women, including Ring customers and employees. More than 55,000 hack victimsPrior to the publication of Wednesday's complaint, public knowledge about Ring employees spying on customers has been known, but vague. The complaint also reveals how many people were the victims of a series of 2019 hacks, which targeted Ring customers in several high profile incidents. Between January 2019 and March 2020, the FTC said in its Wednesday complaint, "more than 55,000 U.S. customers" were the victims of hackers targeting Ring accounts.

Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, a moderate Republican who later helped impeach Paxton, was vocally opposed, calling it an improper use of taxpayer dollars. For Texas House Republicans, it was more about strategy. This GOP-on-GOP conflict in Texas reflects a national struggle between Republicans that rarely, if ever, plays out the way it did in Texas, Jillson said.
